An Early Garnering

STACK, William J.

An Early Garnering.

FIRST EDITION. Santa Cruz, California: Press of E. A. Cook, 1898.

Small 8vo. 59 pp. Original green textured wrappers, stab-sewn with yellow string ties, gilt lettering to the front cover. Stack's first book; the printed dedication reads: "To my Mother and the whole-souled women who have been my Benefactresses, this, my first effort, is gratefully inscribed."

A scarce late-nineteenth-century Santa Cruz imprint — a slim collection of verse by William J. Stack, locally printed at the press of E. A. Cook in 1898. The poems take their subjects from the landscape and seasons of Santa Cruz and the California coast, with titles including "A Song of the Sea," "A Winter Storm in Santa Cruz," "The Orphans' Christmas," and "To Santa Cruz." A genuinely uncommon book: no copies were traced in the antiquarian market at the time of cataloguing, and only two institutional holdings could be located — a survival rate typical of modest, locally produced wrappered volumes from the period.
