Cobden-Sanderson and the Doves Press

POLLARD, Alfred W.; Edward Johnston; T. J. Cobden-Sanderson.

Cobden-Sanderson and the Doves Press.

FIRST EDITION THUS, ONE OF 339 COPIES — JOHN HENRY NASH'S OWN COPY, WITH A DOVES PRESS LEAF. San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1929.

Folio. xviii, 35, [2] pp. Designed and printed by John Henry Nash in Cloister Lightface roman and italic — Morris Fuller Benton's recutting of Nicolas Jenson's letter — printed in black and red, the side-heads in red, on Van Gelder paper. Tipped in is an original leaf from the Doves Press edition of Goethe's Faust. Bound in full limp vellum, the spine lettered in gold, top edge gilt. This is copy No. 282. O'Day, John Henry Nash: A Bibliography, pp. 68–69. Vellum covers somewhat mottled with slight splaying; lacking the slipcase; otherwise a fine copy.

A fine printer's tribute to a fine printer — and here the printer's own copy. John Henry Nash produced this 1929 monograph on the Doves Press. The volume gathers Pollard's history of the press, Edward Johnston's portrait of Cobden-Sanderson (Johnston had been the Doves calligrapher), Cobden-Sanderson's own credo The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful, and a complete list of the Doves printings. The genuine leaf of Doves Press printing tipped into each copy makes this one of the few accessible ways to own actual Doves Press work.
