Correspondance 1909-1951

GIDE, André; ROUVEYRE, André.

Correspondance 1909–1951.

FIRST EDITION, the limited issue: number 19 of a hand-numbered edition of 90 copies — one of the first 30 on Hollande de Montévrain paper, the choicer of the two numbered states. Paris: Mercure de France, 1967.

283, [4] pp. Edited, introduced, and annotated by the Gide scholar Claude Martin. Handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter orange morocco over marbled boards, with raised bands, gilt ruling and lettering to the spine, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, and the original printed wrappers bound in. A fine copy in a striking binding.

The published correspondence between André Gide and André Rouveyre. Rouveyre (1879–1962) was a French writer and caricaturist, a friend and correspondent of Gide and a celebrated portrait subject of Matisse and Modigliani; the volume includes a Rouveyre self-portrait. A refined French primary source for any collection of twentieth-century literary correspondence. Gide (1869–1951) received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947.
