Further Fables for Our Time

THURBER, James.

Further Fables for Our Time.

SPECIAL PRINTING. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1956.

8vo. 174 pp. Drawings by the author throughout. Tan cloth lettered in red, publisher's special printing (so stated on the copyright page), issued without dust jacket in a slipcase, the slipcase not present. Dedicated to the broadcaster Elmer Davis. Toning and soiling to the cloth.

Forty-seven new fables in the manner Thurber had made famous sixteen years earlier in Fables for Our Time — animals conducting the follies of the 1950s, each tale closed with a moral built to bite (“All men should strive to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why”). The collection won the American Library Association's Liberty and Justice Book Award and was a National Book Award finalist in Fiction, both in 1957.
