Baker surveys the forests of the world region by region — Soviet Russia, Africa, India, China, the Pacific islands, the Americas — describing each country's forest resources and forestry practice and what its forests mean to its economy. His argument is that human health and economic security depend on how those forests are managed, and that the damage from clearing them takes different forms according to climate, appearing as desert in Africa and as floods in Italy. The remedy he presses is concerted international action: reforestation on a scale that gives every city its catchment and every farm and hamlet its shelter of trees. Baker (1889–1982) founded Men of the Trees in Kenya in 1922, the reforestation society that continues today as the International Tree Foundation; he worked with Franklin Roosevelt in the establishment of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and after touring the California groves became a campaigner for the Save-the-Redwoods cause.
