A clever hare boasts that the lion is his horse, and then sets about proving it. Charles Mikolaycak (1937–1993) illustrated more than sixty children's books and was known above all for the quality of his design — he designed this one himself, dressing the hare in embroidered folk costume and framing the whole in ornamental borders. He took American Library Association Notable Book Awards in 1975 and 1980 and the New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book Award in 1984 for Babushka. Barbara K. Walker was a folklorist who, with Warren S. Walker and Ahmet E. Uysal, founded the Archive of Turkish Oral Narrative from fieldwork begun in Ankara in 1961; the archive went to Texas Tech University in 1980 and holds some two thousand two hundred narratives in English translation.
