Small octavo, unpaginated, [16] pp. One of 226 numbered copies hand-bound in boards by Black Sparrow and signed by Bukowski on the colophon, issued as the press's annual New Year's Greeting to its friends and customers. Quarter purple cloth over illustrated paper boards depicting a stylized polychrome bird in flight, with "1991" worked into the design; the title-page colophon printed in colors. A small additional run of presentation copies — with a Bukowski drawing and a different cloth spine — exists separately. Fine, as new: bright cloth, clean boards, the signature crisp.
A late Bukowski small-format greeting from Black Sparrow Press, part of the annual tradition John Martin maintained from the series' beginnings in 1969–70 through Bukowski's death in 1994. Each year Martin printed a slim pamphlet of new Bukowski work — a single poem or short prose piece — and sent it to the press's friends and customers, with a signed, numbered hardcover issue of 226 copies reserved for collectors.
The Black Sparrow New Year's pamphlets are now among the most collected items in Bukowski's bibliography — both for their small print runs and because the annual sequence documents, year by year, the work of the press that built him.
