HITCHCOCK, George (editor).

Kayak — Six Issues (Nos. 23, 24, 25, 35, 38, 42).

Six issues: Numbers 23, 24, 25, 35, 38, and 42. Santa Cruz, California: Kayak Books, circa 1969–1976.

All six in the publisher's illustrated stapled wrappers, very good, with light toning and shelf wear consistent with the magazine's inexpensive original production.

Six issues of Kayak — the fiercely independent poetry magazine that George Hitchcock edited, printed, and published very nearly single-handedly from 1964 to 1984. Across its 64 issues, Kayak was, for much of its life, the magazine American poets most wanted to appear in: hospitable to surrealist, imagist, and political work, devoted to the prose poem, the found poem, and translation, and instantly recognizable for its covers built from repurposed nineteenth-century engravings. Contributors over the magazine's run included Robert Bly, W. S. Merwin, Anne Sexton, Philip Levine, Louis Simpson, Diane Wakoski, Michael McClure, Margaret Atwood, Raymond Carver, Gary Snyder, and James Tate, among many others.
