WESTON, Paulette.

Laughing Eyes: A Book of Letters Between Edward and Cole Weston 1923–1946.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. Preface by Graham Nash; afterword by Cole Weston. Carmel, California: Carmel Publishing Company, 1999.

Inscribed on the half-title by Paulette Weston, "For John — Keep on Shooting," and signed by both Paulette Weston and Cole Weston. Tall octavo. 160 pp. Cloth in the publisher's dust jacket, illustrated throughout with black-and-white photo-reproductions and family memorabilia. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.

Three decades of correspondence between Edward Weston and his youngest son Cole, gathered and edited by Cole's wife Paulette. The letters span 1923 to 1946, the years in which Edward was producing the Point Lobos, Carmel, and Big Sur work that helped define how the Monterey Peninsula coast was seen, while Cole grew up through the Depression and the war years before joining his father in Carmel in 1946. Compiled by Paulette for Cole's seventy-ninth birthday and brought to print by Carmel Publishing the following year, the book reads as an intimate counterpart to Edward Weston's celebrated Daybooks — a frequently absent father working to stay close to his son across long separations. A natural fit for any California photography or Monterey Peninsula shelf.
