KIMISHIMA, Hisako; TRESSELT, Alvin; WAKANA, Kei.

Ma Lien and the Magic Brush.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. New York: Parents' Magazine Press, 1968.

4to. English version by Alvin Tresselt; illustrated in color throughout by Kei Wakana. Translated from Ma Lien To Maho No Fude, originally published by Kaisei Sha, Tokyo. Pictorial boards. Toning to the page edges.

A Chinese boy whose one wish is to be an artist is too poor to buy a good brush — until a wizard appears and gives him one with magic powers. Kei Wakana illustrates the tale in flat, brilliant color, the boy's painted brushstrokes uncoiling across the page as they come to life. The English version is by Alvin Tresselt (1916–2000), who won the Caldecott Medal for White Snow, Bright Snow with Roger Duvoisin and took Caldecott Honors for Rain Drop Splash and Hide and Seek Fog; he wrote more than thirty books for children and served as executive editor at Parents' Magazine Press, which published this one.
