An anthology of thirteen Czech and Slovak short stories drawn from the years 1960–1961, issued as a subscriber's premium in Československý spisovatel's KLÍČ series. The contributors are Arnošt Lustig, Ladislav Mňačko, Jan Otčenášek, Milan Smolík, Ivan Kříž, Jan Trefulka, Bohumil Hrabal, Jan Procházka, Ján Johanides, Magda Matuštíková, Vladimír Mináč, Alexandr Kliment and Ivan Klíma. The volume appeared the year before Hrabal's first officially published collection, Perlička na dně (1963) — his 1948 debut had been withdrawn from circulation under the communist regime, and a further manuscript was pulled a week before publication in 1959. Lustig (1926–2011), who survived Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Buchenwald and later received the Franz Kafka Prize, and Ivan Klíma, born in Prague in 1931, are both represented here in the loosening years that preceded the Prague Spring. The jacket is the work of Zdeněk Seydl (1916–1978), who designed for this publishing house for more than twenty-five years across hundreds of books.
