García Márquez's novel of an unnamed Caribbean dictator, so old that nobody living remembers his coming to power and nobody can say for certain whether he is alive or dead. The book unfolds in long unbroken sentences that pass between voices without warning, the narration circling the corpse discovered in the presidential palace and working backward through the regime it ended. Published nine years after One Hundred Years of Solitude; García Márquez received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
