The three novels of the trilogy — first published separately in 1932 and 1934 and collected in one volume in 1936 — retell the 1789 mutiny aboard H.M.S. Bounty from three vantages: the mutiny itself through midshipman Roger Byam, Captain Bligh's epic open-boat passage to Timor, and the mutineers' final refuge on remote Pitcairn's Island. Nordhoff and Hall, both aviators who met while chronicling the Lafayette Flying Corps of the First World War, wrote the books from Tahiti, within sight of the waters they describe; Mutiny on the Bounty became the basis of the 1935 MGM film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Wyeth Edition, first issued in 1940, paired the text with color paintings by N. C. Wyeth, the celebrated illustrator of Treasure Island and Kidnapped.
