The Dear Irish Girl

TYNAN, Katharine.

The Dear Irish Girl.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1899. Published the same year as the London Smith, Elder & Co. first.

Octavo. 312 pp., with two pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Publisher's green cloth, decorated in a darker green with a shamrock-and-scrollwork design and lettered in gilt on the spine and front board. Light spotting to the spine, else a fine and lovely copy.

A turn-of-the-century novel by one of the more prolific writers of the Irish literary world. Katharine Tynan (1859–1931) was a poet and novelist at the center of Dublin literary life. Across a long career, Tynan produced more than a hundred novels alongside some twenty volumes of poetry and several volumes of autobiography. The Dear Irish Girl was her fourth novel. Her fiction characteristically draws on Irish rural settings, Catholic faith, and the romantic and social lives of women. The McClurg American edition is uncommon outside specialist Irish collections. In its decorated green shamrock binding it is an attractive period object.
