The Return of Joaquin: Bloody Bandit of the Mother Lode

SECREST, William B.

The Return of Joaquin. Bloody Bandit of the Mother Lode.

Fresno: Saga-West Publishing Company, 1973.

8vo. 39 pp. Printed wrappers, the front cover in orange and black. Map of California's Mother Lode Country. Pencilled gift inscription dated 1985 and a pencilled price notation on the front blank; otherwise clean.

On 25 July 1853, at a camp on Cantua Creek, the California Rangers under Captain Harry Love shot and killed Joaquin Murrieta and Three-Fingered Jack. Secrest follows what happened next: the head, preserved and exhibited for decades as a curiosity, its passage through the museums and quack medical operations of San Francisco until the State Board of Health moved against them in December 1913, and its presumed destruction in the earthquake and fire of 1906 — along with the persistent counter-story that Joaquin escaped Love's Rangers and lived on. Secrest returns here to a subject he had taken up six years earlier in Joaquin: Bloody Bandit of the Mother Lode, published by the same Fresno press in 1967.
