TAYLOR, Martin Davis.

The Story of Aphid City.

FIRST EDITION. Portola Valley, CA: published by the author, 1999. Story and drawings by Martin Davis Taylor; retold by Catherine N. Coleman.

Oblong 4to, [46] pp., light brown illustrated stiff wrappers. SIGNED and dated "2000" by the author in green ink on the title page. Fine condition throughout. Laid in is substantial original material from the author's signing at the Thunderbird Bookshop, The Barnyard, Carmel: six color and black-and-white prints reproducing the author's illustrations; photographs from the event showing the young author with family and with the Carmel cartoonist Gus Arriola (1917–2008), captioned "THUNDERBIRD JAN. 28, 2001"; and the printed exhibition announcement for "Pen and Ink Drawings by Martin Davis Taylor," January 30 to February 28, at the Thunderbird Bookstore.

An extended pen-and-ink fantasia on insect civilization — intricately drawn aphid cities, beetle-drawn carriages, mounted insect knights, and architectural detail rendered with the obsessive specificity of a child entomologist's imagination.
