The Journal of Albion Moonlight

PATCHEN, Kenneth.

The Journal of Albion Moonlight.

FIRST EDITION — ONE OF 295 NUMBERED COPIES, THIS NO. 242. Mount Vernon, New York: Walpole Printing Office, 1941.

Large octavo. 314 pp. The numbered issue of 295 copies, following a signed deluxe issue of 50. Set in Bodoni types on specially made paper. Original dark cloth-covered boards with stylized pictorial decoration in blue washes; a red title label to the upper board, gilt-stamped and bordered with decorative pictographs, and a red gilt-stamped paper spine label. This copy number 242. Morgan A3. Very good; the spine faded, else clean and tight; no dust jacket.

The novel is the journal of an antiwar pilgrim moving through a landscape of war, surveillance, and cruelty; its formal radicalism — typographic explosion, dream sequences, philosophical fragments, the page increasingly given over to the typeset surface as visual artwork — anticipated by two decades the techniques the Beats and the Black Mountain poets would take up.
