Octavo (8¾ × 6 inches). xxii, 459 pp. Edited by Linnie Marsh Wolfe and dedicated to Muir's daughter Wanda Muir Hanna. Original tan cloth, the upper board and spine printed in red and blue, fore-edge largely uncut. Eight full-page plates from photographs and drawings, with a frontispiece portrait of Muir in Yosemite, 1908. In the original pictorial dust jacket. The first publication of Muir's surviving journals — sixty notebooks covering 1869 to 1911 — gathering his earliest California writing, his Yosemite and Sierra Nevada observations, the Alaska Harriman Expedition notes, and his writings on Robert Burns, among much else. Near fine in a near fine pictorial dust jacket; boards clean, square, and bright, the binding tight, the interior fresh with several leaves still uncut; all plates and tipped-in materials present and intact.
This copy is substantially enhanced. Tipped to the front pastedown is an original period photographic portrait of John Muir on its mount — a soft-focus pictorialist profile of Muir in old age — captioned in period ink "Dassenville Portrait" (a contemporary spelling of Dassonville). Beneath the mount, in the same hand, are the names Neal M. Muir and John C. Muir. Laid in separately is an original silver gelatin photograph of a young man, identified in period ink on the verso as Neil Muir. Tipped in at the contents leaf is a reproduction of Muir's pen-and-ink "Live Oak" drawing from his first journal, captioned in his hand "Live Oak, W. Coast Fla." And on the front pastedown, in a single dense pen inscription dated "Yosemite, April 8, 1938" — at or near the date of publication — is a heartfelt presentation note from "Haswell" to "Fitch," composed in Yosemite itself.
