STEGNER, Wallace.

Angle of Repose.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING — INSCRIBED. Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, 1971.

Octavo. 569 pp. "First Edition" stated on the copyright page. Original pale green cloth, blind-stamped front board, gilt lettering to the front board and spine; in the original illustrated dust jacket designed by E.D.N. Designs, with an author photograph by Alex Gotfryd, priced $7.95 and unclipped. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Mrs. Fitzgerald, cordially, Wallace Stegner." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket; light wear at the extremities.

Stegner's Pulitzer-winning novel, and the book he is most likely to be remembered by. Lyman Ward, a wheelchair-bound historian estranged from his family, sets out to write the lives of his frontier-era grandparents, moving between his own difficult present in 1970s California and the mining West of the 1870s, where his grandmother — an illustrator transplanted from a cultivated East — made the marriage that would shape three generations. The novel draws closely, and controversially, on the actual letters of Mary Hallock Foote, the nineteenth-century writer-illustrator on whom Stegner based the character of Susan Burling Ward.
