The 1993 Black Sparrow Press New Year's Greeting, here in two issue states: the numbered hardcover, limited to 226 hand-bound copies signed by Bukowski on the colophon, this being copy #190; together with a fine copy of the softcover trade edition in matching cream-and-shooting-star wrappers. Small octavo, approximately 7.5 × 4.5 inches. The hardcover in cream cloth spine over illustrated paper-covered boards in cream, silver, and gold; the softcover in the identical illustrated wrappers. Both copies fine.

The title poem returns him to the schoolyards of his Los Angeles boyhood — the paper-bag lunch, the daily humiliation of being poor among classmates — and closes on a note of plain tenderness that sits oddly and powerfully against the public Bukowski. It is the kind of poem he had earned the right to write only at the end.
