The first book by Louis Owens (1948–2002) — the Choctaw-Cherokee novelist and critic later known for The Sharpest Sight, Bone Game, and the landmark study Other Destinies — written years before he turned to fiction. Owens reads Steinbeck's California as a fallen Eden, examining how the writer used that would-be paradise to expose the moral bankruptcy beneath the American dream.
