Under the Redwoods

HARTE, Bret.

Under the Redwoods.

FIRST EDITION (BAL 7396). Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1901.

16mo. 334 pp. Original red decorative cloth, stamped in black on the front board, with gilt spine lettering, in a publisher's printed dust jacket. Minor wear to spine ends; slight darkening to spine; light spotting; else book is near fine.

One of Bret Harte's last collections of California stories, published in 1901, the year before his death. By this date Harte had lived in Europe for over two decades — U.S. consul first in Germany, then at Glasgow (1880–85), before settling in London and, latterly, at the Van de Veldes' house at Camberley, where he died. The ten stories are returns, from England, to the Gold Rush and post–Gold Rush California that had made his name a generation earlier; they include "Bohemian Days in San Francisco," a chapter of late autobiographical reminiscence. The collection belongs to the long Boston sequence of Harte's California books that began with The Luck of Roaring Camp in 1870.

The book in the standard trade format is not uncommon, but it is very seldom found in any dust jacket — printed jackets on trade fiction of this period were almost always discarded, and first-edition copies offered by antiquarian dealers are, almost without exception, jacketless. This copy survives in a publisher's printed jacket, a genuinely scarce survival for a Harte title of this date.
