A gathering of Mary Austin's poems for children, drawn, as she explains in her preface, from nearly forty years of writing — many of the verses first appearing across decades in St. Nicholas, The Youth's Companion, The Nation, The Forum, and other magazines. Austin writes that she made most of the poems "with the help of the children in my school," and that doing so led her "into the secret of how the great Southwest feels." The drawings are by Gerald Cassidy (1879–1934), the Santa Fe painter known for his Southwestern subjects. The Children Sing in the Far West, published late in her life, is less often collected than that book but belongs on any full Austin shelf — particularly in the original jacket.
