A scarce production at 75 copies, seldom seen in the trade, here inscribed by Cloutier. A single poem printed on 17 unnumbered leaves, recto only, in a tall narrow format (11 × 4¼ inches); pale green wrappers. A near fine copy.
Inscribed by the poet on the title page: "For Elizabeth, with good wishes — David Cloutier."
Cloutier's poem takes its title from Garrapata, the stretch of coast about seven miles south of Carmel along Highway 1, now Garrapata State Park, where coastal bluffs and scrub give way to redwood groves running down toward the sea. It is country Edward Weston knew well; he lived nearby and photographed in and around what is now the park. The poem opens under an epigraph from Robert Duncan, placing this coastal meditation in the lineage of San Francisco Renaissance poetry. The tall, narrow page answers its subject — the vertical drop of cliff to water — and the spare recto-only printing gives each passage room.
