ADAMS, Alice.

Careless Love.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. New York: New American Library, 1966.

Octavo. 183 pp. In the publisher's dust jacket. Dedicated in print to Max and Diana Steele. A decorative bookplate accompanies the volume. An attractive, well-preserved copy in the publisher's jacket.

Signed by Alice Adams on the title page and inscribed by her on the front free endpaper: "For Mig, with love from Alice, June 1966" — the month of publication.

Careless Love was Alice Adams's first book. She was forty when it appeared, after years as a single mother doing clerical work in San Francisco and writing in stolen hours; it is a sharp, bittersweet portrait of the divorced, upper-Bohemian Bay Area of the early 1960s — the social world she would go on to map across eleven novels and decades of New Yorker stories. A signed and inscribed copy of her first book, dated to the month of publication, is genuinely scarce.
