CRUMB, R.
Bible of Filth.
FIRST EDITION, limited to 1,000 numbered copies, this being #597. Paris: Futuropolis, 1986.
Small octavo, unpaginated. Original black morocco binding stamped in silver, with yellow silk ribbon bookmark; issued without dust jacket, the original publisher's sleeve not present with this copy. A fine copy.
A reference Bible bound for a different congregation. Crumb assembled this small leather-bound volume of his most explicit underground comics — work drawn from Snatch, Jiz, Zap, XYZ, Big Ass, and Uneeda — and Futuropolis printed it in Paris in a thousand numbered copies, designed to look like a pocket Bible. It was never distributed in the United States; the graphic sexual content kept it out.
Crumb is the central figure of San Francisco underground comics — Zap, Mr. Natural, Fritz the Cat, Keep on Truckin' — and Bible of Filth gathers his sexual material in a single volume produced for a European audience. Three decades on, an expanded English-language edition was published by David Zwirner Books in 2017, but the 1986 Futuropolis printing remains the trophy: small, leather-bound, numbered, ribbon-marked, and physically indistinguishable from any other Bible on a shelf.
