Octavo. [viii], 69, [1] pp. Quarter ivory linen over gray paper-covered boards, printed paper spine label. A near fine copy: light toning to the board edges, characteristic of the ivory linen; armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Housed in the original publisher's slipcase, which is soiled, and lacking its spine; the book itself sound and attractive.
One of Millay's major collections, issued in the prestige form Harper produced alongside the ordinary trade hardcover: handmade Arches paper, a quarter-linen binding, slipcase, and a colophon limitation signed by the poet herself. The collection holds several poems that entered the standard canon of twentieth-century American verse, among them "Moriturus," "On Hearing a Symphony of Beethoven," and the title poem, which remains one of the most anthologized of her shorter works. The volume sits at the hinge between her early Greenwich Village lyric brilliance and the more politically engaged poetry that followed her involvement in the Sacco and Vanzetti case.
The trade hardcover of The Buck in the Snow is common. The signed limited issue is uncommon, and a copy with the author's signature present and the original quarter-linen binding intact is the form collectors look for.
