STEWART, George R.

East of the Giants.

FIRST EDITION. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1938.

Signed by the author on the title page. 8vo. 478 pp. Original orange-brown cloth; pictorial map endpapers printed in color; in the color-printed pictorial dust jacket. Near fine in a very good dust jacket, the jacket price-clipped, with a small triangular chip to the upper rear edge, the front flap partially separated, darkening to the spine, and minor wear to the extremities.

East of the Giants is a panoramic novel of California from 1837 to 1861, following Judith Hingham, a New England woman who arrives by brig in Monterey harbor and is drawn into the changing fortunes of Mexican and then American California: the hide-and-tallow ranchos, the vaqueros and traders, the Bear Flag revolt, the Gold Rush, and the upheavals that followed. Signed first editions of Stewart's first novel are uncommon.
