Inscribed on the title page in the author's hand: "Yeah ----- a cold vicious / day in Vermont. Write / your brains out - / Annie Proulx." Proulx was living and writing in Vermont when Postcards was published, and the inscription — bracing, plain-spoken, in the voice of a working writer — is characteristic of her. 8vo. 308, [1] pp. Quarter brown cloth over speckled beige paper-covered boards; in the original illustrated dust jacket, unclipped ($22.95). Postcards itself follows Loyal Blood, eldest son of a failing New England farm family, who flees after a violent crime and spends the next half-century adrift across the postwar American West while the family he left behind slowly comes apart. The narrative is interleaved with reproduced postcards from the Bloods' scattered correspondence — the formal device that gives the novel its title and its structure.
