Laid in is a separately published critical study — Leslie Marmon Silko by Per Seyersted (Boise State University Western Writers Series No. 45), a 50-page staplebound monograph on Silko's work, a useful companion to the volume.

The book braids Pueblo oral tradition with contemporary autobiographical writing, and its unusual oblong (landscape) format is itself part of the design. Silko (b. 1948) was raised at the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico, of Laguna, Mexican, and Anglo-American background; Storyteller is the fullest statement of the storytelling tradition that runs through all her work. The clothbound issue was printed simultaneously with the paperback and is the scarcer of the two.
