STACTON, David.

If Light in August: Poems.

FIRST EDITION, limited to 30 copies; this is copy number 30, the last in the edition. Drypoints by Clare D. Lune and Marc Stacton. Oakland, California: The Conspiratorial Impermanent Press, 1984. Signed at the colophon by both Marc Stacton and Clare D. Lune.

Tall octavo. 14 unnumbered leaves. Cream wrappers with an etched vignette to the front cover and lettering to the spine, in the publisher's glassine jacket. A near fine copy, with light wear, faint creasing to the lower front corner, and a small tear and chip to the rear glassine wrapper.

A posthumous fine-press gathering of poems by David Stacton (1923–1968), the San Francisco-born novelist and historian, produced as a thirty-copy artist's book and designed at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Its title echoes Faulkner, and the sequence appeared sixteen years after Stacton's death — his poetry far less known than his fiction.

A careful piece of letterpress work: printed on Mohawk Letterpress stock, enfolded in Arches Cover sheets, the drypoints pulled in several states by Clare D. Lune and Marc Stacton, the whole designed at the California College of Arts and Crafts. The Conspiratorial Impermanent Press was one of the small CCAC-affiliated imprints producing limited artist's books in the period; thirty-copy editions seldom appear in the trade. This is copy number 30, the last in the edition.
