MILLER, Henry.

Tròpic de Càncer.

FIRST CATALAN-LANGUAGE EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. Translated into Catalan by Jordi Arbonès; carrying Anaïs Nin's preface; cover by Santi Pau. Barcelona: Aymà, S. A. Editora, 1976.

Small octavo. 271 pp. Original pictorial wrappers in the publisher's Tròpics series. Near fine. Laid into this copy is an autograph letter, signed, addressed to Henry Miller ("Dear Mr. Miller"); the copy was acquired as coming from Miller's own library.

The first Catalan translation of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer — the novel first published in Paris by the Obelisk Press in 1934 and barred from the United States until 1961. Jordi Arbonès's version appeared in Barcelona under the Aymà imprint in the period following the end of the Franco regime, when Catalan-language publishing was re-emerging and frank erotic writing was reaching Spanish readers for the first time in decades. The edition carries Anaïs Nin's preface, and Arbonès — one of the major Catalan literary translators of his generation — would render nine of Miller's books into Catalan.
