Octavo. 514 pp. Four black-and-white illustrated plates by Maynard Dixon, each signed in the plate, all present. Printed by the Quinn & Boden Co. Press. A fine copy in an about-near-fine dust jacket, with wear to the extremities and along the joints and minor creasing to the lower front edge. The dust jacket is the principal scarcity feature of the U.S. first edition — most surviving copies have lost their fragile jackets, and the present jacket places this in the upper band of trade copies.
Robert Service's major novel — a fictional treatment of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush stampede, written by the British-Canadian poet known as the "Bard of the Yukon" out of his own Whitehorse and Dawson City years as a Bank of Commerce clerk. Per the dust-jacket flap: "Here at last is the story of the great stampede of gold-seekers to Alaska. It is a story of incredible daring, greed, cruelty, suffering, fortitude — a drama of epic magnitude enacted among the snow-filled passes and frozen plains of the far north."
