The first printing of a previously unknown Thoreau manuscript — his English rendering of a Sanskrit tale, taken from S. A. Langlois's French translation of the Harivansa (Paris, 1834). The volume reproduces Thoreau's handwritten manuscript leaves in sixteen pages of facsimile, followed by the transcription and the French source, with Christy's introduction setting the translation against Thoreau's lifelong interest in Oriental literature and the ascetic strain in his thought.
