BRUSA, Betty War.

The Bracero.

FIRST EDITION. New York: Pageant Press, Inc., 1966. Illustrated by Vivian Berger.

Small 4to. 41 pp. Red cloth in the publisher's red and cream pictorial dust jacket. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket with minor wear at the spine head. Inscribed by the author in red ink on the title page: "To 'My' Hepper Family, with love — Betty (War Brusa)." Inscribed first editions are uncommon.

A short illustrated novel by a lifelong Salinas Valley resident, telling the story of Diego, a young man who leaves his home in the south of Mexico for the California fields under the Bracero Program. He travels the length of Mexico on foot, by donkey cart, and by bus, arriving in the Salinas Valley expecting "mistrust and perhaps even hostility" and finding instead a community more welcoming than he had imagined.
