Dedicated to Elaine — Elaine Anderson Scott, whom Steinbeck married weeks after the play closed. In its original first-issue jacket, with characteristic fade across the bottom of the front panel and along the spine, the orange softened toward cream; light chipping at the spine head and top edge.

Four characters move through three settings — a circus, a farm, and a ship — replaying a single domestic story: a husband's longing for a child and his wife's secret to give him one.
