Front-flap blurbs from Orville Prescott (The New York Times) and Lewis Gannett (New York Herald Tribune). The Heinemann edition was separately set, running 525 pp against the Viking New York first's 602 pp (Goldstone & Payne A32).

The novel runs across two generations of two Salinas Valley families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — built on a Cain-and-Abel allegorical structure.
