The Heinemann edition was separately set, running 525 pp against the Viking New York first's 602 pp (Goldstone & Payne A32).

The novel runs across two generations of two Salinas Valley families — the Trasks and the Hamiltons — built on a Cain-and-Abel allegorical structure.
