Under Scott in Mexico

BONEHILL, Captain Ralph [Edward Stratemeyer].

Under Scott in Mexico.

FIRST EDITION. Boston: Dana Estes & Company, 1902.

Octavo. 287 pp. Eight full-page illustrations by Jo J. Mora, including a frontispiece with tissue guard. Publisher's gray cloth, lettered in black, with a black-and-blue pictorial design of two soldiers on the front cover and a pictorial spine. Copyright Dana Estes & Company; electrotyped and printed by the Colonial Press, Boston. Fading to the spine; light wear to the extremities, more so at the spine ends and lower boards; else a very good copy.

"Captain Ralph Bonehill" was one of Edward Stratemeyer's principal personal pseudonyms, used in the years before he founded the Stratemeyer Syndicate in 1905. Under Scott in Mexico is the third and final volume of his Mexican War trilogy, issued by Dana Estes between 1900 and 1902 and set during General Winfield Scott's 1847 campaign in the Mexican–American War, though it stands as a complete story in itself.

The illustrations are early work by Jo J. Mora (1876–1947), then in his mid-twenties and working in the East as a young illustrator before the Western and California work for which he is now best known. A scarce title, uncommon with the Mora illustrations.
